Below
you'll find a listing of parks, recreation and attractions from
around the St. Charles County area including wildlife preserves,
natural wetlands, forested areas, fishing, hiking and nature
trails.
Hideaway
Harbor Park
Located on Sioux Drive just west of Portage Des Sioux, this
49-acre park has spectacular views across the Mississippi River
towards the Great River Road. St. Charles County acquired this
site as flood buy-out property following the flood of 1993.
Prior to 1993, it was an operating harbor with docks, boat ramps,
fishing lake, and rest rooms. The site includes natural wetlands,
forested areas, an accessible fishing dock, and Weber Lake.
Klondike
Park
The park includes: camper cabins, the Curt Loupe Conference
Center, a fishing lake, boat ramp to the Missouri River, natural
areas, basic and primitive campsites, biking and hiking trails,
access to the Katy Trail, picnic areas, a playground area, and
observation areas with tremendous views of the Missouri River,
surrounding forests and farmland in St. Louis and Franklin counties.
Matson
Hill Park
Located in Southwestern St. Charles County Matson Hill Park
is a 68.5-acre park is rugged with wooded hills and intermittent
valleys. Located within the Daniel Boone Historic District,
the park is reminiscent of the area during Boone's life. In
fact, it is possible that Daniel Boone walked within the park's
boundaries during some of his many journeys. This park provides
a unique recreational opportunity for nature lovers or those
wanting to escape into a heavily forested landscape. Matson
Hill Park offers a rugged 3-mile single-track trail that follows
the contours of the land, crosses creeks and passes by many
natural features. Designated for hike and bike use only, the
Matson Hill Trail is an intermediate trail that offers a new
challenge around every corner.
Indian
Camp Creek Park
Situated at the confluence of Big Creek and Indian Camp Creek
in northwestern St. Charles County, Indian Camp Creek Park is
the largest in the St. Charles County Parks Department’s
system. At more than 600 acres, Indian Camp Creek Park furthers
the department’s goal of preserving green space by featuring
dedicated prairie land, vast wooded hills, limited infrastructure,
and protected habitat for the deer, turkey, quail, and other
wildlife found inside the park. It also presents a look into
the history of
the
region. Evidence shows that several American Indian communities
settled the site in the Mississippian Period.
Katy
Trail State Park
The Katy Trail State Park is a recreation rail trail that runs
225 miles in the right-of-way of the former Missouri-Kansas-Texas
Railroad. The trail often known as the Katy Trail is a Missouri
state park and the longest Rails-to-Trails trail in the United
States. Sections of the Katy are part of the Lewis and Clark
National Historic Trail and the American Discovery Trail. Most
of the trail follows the northern bank of the Missouri River.
The trail is
open
for use by hikers, joggers, and cyclists year-round, from sunrise
to sunset. The trail is made up of "limestone pug"
creating a hard flat surface.
